Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins. Some call the day some variant of “Fat Tuesday,” such as Mardi Gras.
The word shrove is a form of the English word shrive. It means to receive absolution for your sins by way of confession and doing penance. The name Shrove Tuesday is from the custom of Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent.
During the liturgical season of Lent, believers have historically abstained from rich foods such as meat, eggs, dairy products, and alcohol. That meant using up those foods this day, before Lent begins.
