SUMMARY:Ashes to go
DESCRIPTION:There will be Ashes to Go in The Hangar at Kenmore Town Square on Ash Wednesday\, February 18\, 2026\, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Pastor Jill Nichols-Hicks and the Rev. Theresa Newell will be available for conversation during this time. \n\nCome to receive ashes.\n\n\nCome to speak with either or both people.\n\n\nCome to unburden anything heavy on your heart.\n\n\nCome to vent about your hurts and frustrations with our all-too-human church.\n\n\nCome to question and explore ideas about God.\n\nWhy ashes?\nWe distribute ashes to remember that our lives are short\, and we don’t want to spend it burdened by guilt or remorse. We give ourselves a gift by allowing ourselves time to unburden from our sin and spend more time forgiven\, healed\, restored\, and renewed. \nWhat is Ash Wednesday?\nAsh Wednesday is observed in several religious traditions. This is the beginning of Lent.  This year Ash Wednesday falls on February 18\, 2026. \nWhat is Lent?\nLent is a time for truth and reconciliation. On Ash Wednesday\, and throughout Lent\, we examine our lives truthfully and take ownership of the times we have fallen short of being our best selves. It is our faith that God understands and extends love\, forgiveness\, grace\, and healing that gives us the courage to admit our wrongdoing. Thus\, we repent and relish in God’s loving embrace. \nBlessed Ashes\nAshes blessed for use on Ash Wednesday are a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality. The Hebrew Scriptures frequently mentions the use of ashes as an expression of humiliation and sorrow. \nAshes for use on Ash Wednesday are made from burned palms from previous Palm Sunday services. Ashes are imposed on the penitent’s forehead with the words\, “Remember that you are dust\, and to dust you shall return” (Book of Common Prayer\, p. 265; Genesis 3:19). \nThe imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday is optional. \nWho may participate?\nAll are welcome to participate fully. \n\nAll races.\nAll religions.\nAll countries of origin.\nAll sexual orientations\, including LGBTQ+.\nAll genders.

SUMMARY:Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Church of the Redeemer’s next community meal is on Shrove Tuesday\, February 17\, 2026\, at 5:30 pm. There will be pancakes\, breakfast meat\, and fruit salad. \nWe invite everyone to join us for food and fellowship. \nAll are welcome\nAll are welcome to participate fully at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. \n\nAll races.\nAll religions.\nAll countries of origin.\nAll sexual orientations\, including LGBTQ+.\nAll genders.\n\n\nShrove Tuesday\nShrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday\, when Lent begins. Some call the day some variant of “Fat Tuesday\,” such as Mardi Gras. \nThe word shrove is a form of the English word shrive. It means to receive absolution for your sins by way of confession and doing penance. The name Shrove Tuesday is from the custom of Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent. \nDuring the liturgical season of Lent\, believers have historically abstained from rich foods such as meat\, eggs\, dairy products\, and alcohol. That meant using up those foods this day\, before Lent begins.
